Signs of tar-burning in the landscape

Tar was still commonly distilled in Kainuu during the depression of the1930s. The Lietekylä village Raiskio tar-burning pit, complete with intact chimney, dates back to this time. A great pine forest now sighs above the older pits, with monuments to the age of tar burning such as still-standing barked or marked trees of the pine stands. It is still possible to see the crown, year and the signs of the tar burner and donator of the stand, carved into the bark of the marked pines.
