Barrel making

Some tar burners specialised in making barrels. The staves were carved using a grooved wooden frame attached to walls and then the seams were planed. The staves were assembled inside a hoop and the last stave was wedged in tight to seal it. A groove was scraped along the staves for the bottom end of the barrel. When the bottom end was ready, the top hoop was fixed in place using the back of an axe and a hoop hook. The barrels were taken to the pit when the snow could carry a sleigh.
